Cyborg Cycles

Image Cyborg Cycles represent the third evolution of dynamo-powered noise bikes in Barcelona. These unique bicycles combine D.I.Y. sound generators with the live coding software Tidal Cycles, creating an immersive lo-fi algonoise installation showcased at Toplap ICLC 2025.

Each bike generates power through pedaling, driving an amplifier connected to multiple speakers as well as a Raspberry Pi running Tidal Cycles—software for crafting live-coded musical patterns. Riders can interact with the sound in real time using a standard computer keyboard mounted on the front handlebars. If you stop pedaling the system will power down and you will need to start from scratch.

This project draws inspiration from the global D.I.Y. cycling community—builders of “freak bikes,” organizers of Radspiele, critical masses, cyclo camps, and other communal gatherings. By generating its own power, the bicycle becomes an empowering tool: not just a means of movement, but a mobile platform for creating sound and light, independent of existing power structures.
